Nautical Lights and the Beach
Sunday, August 21st, 2011Next month I get to go to the beach, and in anticipation of my journey to the ocean I purchased some nautical lights for my home. I live in a landlocked state and I am very far from the nearest ocean. I am also nowhere near the Great Lakes, so nautical lights in my area were a little hard to find.
It is interesting to me how the nautical style is so distinct and unique. How did it evolve to be that way? For example, do buoy lights really need those cages around them? Do mast lanterns really need to be that elongated shape? I do not mean to sound critical, I enjoy the look and style of them, I just do not understand how nautical lights came to be so distinct.
When I am back at the beach (we are going to the Outer Banks of North Carolina), I will have to keep an eye out for some shipwise history. Perhaps next month when I return to the ocean again I will ask a savvy old veteran of the sea how nautical lights came to be the way they are. Either way, I now have some nautical lights in my finished basement so I can pretend the sea is near in this landlocked state.

It is our one day of the year that we don’t have to wait on the men, since they all go to the golf course for the day. Jones says that retail volume of satin sheets and comforters, about $230-million in 1984, was projected to rise to $280-million for 1986. The projection for 1988 is $370-million. Monday, March 14th, 2011Finally managed to convince my husband to get in the car and come and look at sofas with me at the weekend. Has taken nearly two months to get to this point and it was only after pointing out that the Winter sales must be coming to an end soon now that it’s almost Spring that he agreed. So, we jumped in the car and did something we never do. Drove to a hellish out of town sofa superstore. What misery. It was full of people who seemed to be doing this not because they needed to buy a sofa, but weirdly because they had nothing else to do. Whole families were in there, with little toddlers climbing on the sofas. It didn’t exactly inspire me to buy. Even the leather sofas would be getting a battering with that amount of bad treatment. I imagine that the showroom sofas get sold off at big discounts, but even though, it looked bad. We saw a couple that we did like but the atmosphere was horrendous so we decided to call off the search there and then. Since then we have found some good websites which show you 3D images of the furniture and even allow you to upload a photo of your living room and superimpose the sofa! It has been useful and fun and we are a bit closer to making the decision. We have thrown sofa beds into the mix because we realised that there is no way we are going to sell our one bed flat during this hellishly bad time to sell property- and our parents will still want to come and stay, especially during the olympics so that could be a wise investment.
