Why We Are Getting Pet Insurance

Monday, October 10th, 2011

I need to get pet insurance. We are getting a new puppy and we have experienced the loss that caner can bring with a pet. We had three beautiful dogs that we raised from puppies. Two of them had cancer. One died. The third is suspected now of having cancer. We are going to get another puppy but get pet insurance this time. It cost us 25,000 dollars to treat our girl who died of cancer. She was such a great dog. When you make a commitment, you have to stick with it. We don’t believe any life is disposable. We understand that some people prefer euthanasia, we just cannot do that. We have done it before with a pet and it is devastating. Our dog that had cancer and died lived for a few years when she was only given a couple of months. Pet insurance will pay for it if it happens again. We are still paying back the loans for our dog who died of cancer.

Buying the Best for My Friend

Sunday, September 4th, 2011

I never stopped to think about the quality of my dog food until a recent epidemic hit our state. A certain dog food manufacturer used ingredients in their food which they ordered from China. The ingredients must have gone off during the shipping process but nobody realized the dangers. As it happened they became aware of it only when the owner of the dog food company’s dog died. After that they received complaints from Vets and clients. After some research they found that the spoiled ingredient can cause dogs to loose their hair, hearing and eventually they can die without treatment. After reading the news paper articles I was so shocked that I immediately went to check that my best friend’s food did not contain the specific Chinese ingredient. But luckily my brand of blue buffulo dog food contained just natural ingredients! From now on, only the best is good enough for my best friend!

Dog Boot Camp

Sunday, August 21st, 2011

Dog boot camp is a relatively new training concept that enables one to be able to take their dog to a residential dog camp for some days away from home. This is a relatively new idea that has been received very well especially in the western world where most dog training companies usually in conjunction with dog owners organize an event that can be used to bring together several dog owners together with dogs to a training camp. In this camp, dogs are usually subjected to a very intensive session that aims to make them better animals after the session. These sessions are usually very intensive as dogs are subjected to aggressive dog training sessions to enable them learn to become more independent when the course is through. The conditions in these camps are usually military style and this is done to make a dog be able to be strong and tolerate suffering as well.

Creative Betta Fish Names

Friday, August 19th, 2011

Many betta fish owners feel a special connection to their little fish, and its not a big surprise. The fish get conditioned to their owners, and will swim up to the surface of the bowl when they walk into the room. This is probably not because the fish have warmed to their owner’s personalities, but because they want to be fed. Still, once the bond is set, people usually want to have a good betta fish name for their companion.

You can, of course, name your betta fish absolutely anything you want to. You can name it after your dog, or your ex-boyfriend or girlfriend, or name it whatever color it happens to be. Its all good. But some people (many, actually) like to be a little bit different. That’s when the name search begins.

The easiest place to start is with another language. Spanish, French and even Greek have plenty of exquisite-sounding words for perfectly common names like water and red.

Diagnosing Dog Skin Problems

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

When a vet diagnoses dog skin problems, it is usually based on the a number of factors, namely the dog’s history, the environment in which it lives (including the food it eats) and the way it is treated by its owner. The vet will also usually look at exactly what the affected area looks like so that they can diagnose either bacterial skin infections, parasites or allergies. When you bring your dog to the vet’s office, they may either be able to recognise the condition on site, or may need to do a biopsy on the lesion or piece of skin affected. In this case, they will send the biopsied material to a lab so that it can be examined and a correct diagnosis can be given. Once your dog has been diagnosed, the vet will prescribe the right treatment, which may involve antibiotics or creams, or simply a patch to stop your dog from scratching and biting the affected area.

Cutting Costs on Pet Supplies

Sunday, July 24th, 2011

We have three gorgeous terriers: ages 3, 5, and 6. I love them all very much, but our budget seems to get stretched every month. My husband is one of those people who is constantly reading articles related to keeping our little guys healthy and happy. However, almost every time he reads an article regarding pet care, we are off to one of the pet stores to find some new type of vitamin or the latest dog dental care item. The problem with all this is, the retail stores charge an arm and leg for these items. The markup was killing our house budget. On a lark, I decided to look online for discount pet supplies. I did a web search for dog supplies, and sure enough I found a website that had all manner of pet products, including a section for dogs. It allowed me to search by different categories or for a specific item. And what’s more important, the cost was much less then we could find in any big retail chain store in our area. Now when my husband comes out of his office, excited about the latest in pet bedding, I punch the name into my search engine and pay much less then we ever expected.

Golden Labrador Retriever Breeds

Monday, June 20th, 2011

Lately the yellow Labs have been mixed with golden retrievers to get what is called the Golden Labrador retriever. They are also called the Golden retriever and the Goldador retriever. They are not purebred dogs and if you want to register them can do so only as a hybrid. In fact these dogs do not breed true and you can never say whether the resulting pup will have a long or a short coat or even the color. In fact there are known Golden retriever and Labrador mixes that are black in color and if it were not for the slightly more lankier build can be mistaken for a pure bred Labrador.

The Golden Labs are a very good combination and the dogs seem to have inherited the best of both breeds and the similarities of their temperament only complement each other. Not all Golden retrievers are a rich golden color though and if you want a pup that is so colored it is best to inquire into the pedigree of the dog. Breeders have been known to introduce other dogs into the mix just to get a desired color and it is best to know exactly what has gone into the mix.

Prices Going Up

Saturday, May 7th, 2011

Many pet supply stores in my area seem to be raising their prices lately. This is a big deal for me since I have three cats, a hamster, and a horse. The hamster doesn’t eat much of course, so his food going up in price is not a big deal. Recently, though, the specialty cat food I have been feeding has gone up by three dollars per bag. I go through about one bag per week with my big boys, so this is significant. Horse feed has also gone up. I feed a premium pellet with a built-in vitamin and mineral supplement, so it is already on the high end of the price range. I am considering switching to a cheaper pellet and adding my own supplements, but I still have to work out how this would go cost-wise. Oh well, I guess this is all just a part of our failing economy!

Generic Heartgard for Dogs

Saturday, February 26th, 2011

Any pet owner who finds the expenditure of buying branded medications too much for his or her pet dogs can actually save from buying generic ones. Most people may have the misconception that generic medications are less effective and safe than the branded ones but the reality is they are just the same. What makes the generic ones cheap is the low cost of packaging, advertisements, and the lack of a patented brand. An example of a generic drug is the generic Heartgard for pet dogs. Commonly known as Valuheart, the drug offers the same amount of effectiveness, safety, and quality.

So as pet owners, we must remember that in taking good care of our domestic canines, it doesn’t need to be expensive all the time. Sometimes, it also matters to do a little budgeting since at the present time all sorts of costs are rising. Be a responsible yet wise pet owner by choosing generics.

Things to Know Before Building a Chicken Coop

Saturday, February 19th, 2011

What’s a chicken coop? It is a structure usually made out of wood to keep the chickens at home or in the backyard usually. They are taken care of by the housekeepers themselves and nourished so that they lay fresh eggs every morning. The room essential for setting it up depends on the chicken count. Approximately 40 square feet of area is desirable for 10 chickens. You can learn more info about sizes from DIY chicken coop plans.

There are two types of chicken coop which can be built; one being the fixed and the other portable. The advantages of the portable coop are that they are easier to build, maintain and one can carry their chickens along. But they are not as durable as the fixed ones. Predators like the rats, dogs, foxes, etc are always looking for a loop hole to get to their pray, that is the chickens. Thus a proper protection mechanism must be installed for the chicken coop.
